===================================================================10 Google Apps (Tools) for Teachers and Parents

Google Translate- can write in English and ask google to translate (Is this for non-English speaking parents?)It is not 100% accurate translation, but it is close. Maybe an idea would be to add a disclosure statement at the beginning about the translating accuracy.I had a 5th grade student that came in from Vietnam with no English comprehension. We were able to communicate via Google Translate. I teach technology and he was able to take almost all of my activities and translate my docs into his language of comfort, do what he needed in his language & translate it back to English. Not perfect, but he was able to keep up & still get a lot out of the class.

Can also use in a verbal format as well as written through use of app on smart phone.Can use in Parent Conferences to communicate with non-English parents/guardians

Gmail Canned Responses-These are templates: permission slips, grades, behavior incidents, missing assignments, complimentsI could use this for missing notebooks, folders, books, etc.!!!Why not use google docs instead?

else changes it? How to: 1)Go to Settings and click whether which users can edit and which users can only view. You can change it anytime and it automatically updates without you having to re-send the link. You can change the permissions after it is updated.Settings:2)Labs: Search for Canned, then enable: Go to compose- new canned response and title it (forgot something). Then type the template. Ex: "Dear_, _ 's I Can Read Notebook was left at home today. Please return this to school tomorrow." Don't forget to save! (so I can reuse later)

import contacts https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14024?hl=en

Need to enable on gmail account found in settings labs tab.

Gmail Contact groups-mass email parentsCreate a new group, input new emails one time automatically updated as new emails arrive - give a title, like class parents

I use a google form at the beginning of the year to collect parent emails that I funnel into contact groups by section/class. A little work up front, but well worth it!

Google Calendar for parent work in classroom- google.com/calendarGive title, make public, hit create, click on dates to list thingsGo back to settings in calendar and click html and can send as a link to the parent coordinator, who fills it in as parents respond, then sends it out to me and everyone once it is filled in. How to lock it so no one

Blogger.com- list assignments, class photos, allow comments- can list websites for families to visit for remediation and links.can attach documents to CalendarIs this part of google for education where it has a "garden wall"?Talk to your District Tech Coordinator - or department - and ask them to "open" these areas as well.

Google Voice-* use as personal Phone number for parents (not give out personal number)new phone number- free: allows exchange of text msgs (to my computer, so that I do not use up my texting plan) with parents, can use it just for voicemail-it will transcribe voicemail!!! (Can be saved--not always accurate, but close) Can make a record of voicemail- GoogleVoice has saved my life. It has saved a transcript of every single phone "transaction" I've ever made in the 5 years . I'm able to provide proof of every single little piece of communication, in case there's ever a question or complaint from a family, as to whether communication was attempted" I can block calls- I can record calls. Use "Widget" button to put on webpage to make it easier for parents to contact.it will connect to my cell phone and regular landline Only available in USGreat documentation tool to transcribe voicemails from parents and records calls. https://support.google.com/voice/answer/115061?hl=enhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-voice/id318698524?mt=8

Google Drive: (Formerly known as Google Docs) Word processing online, group editing available.

Gmail Labels:Can organize your email, using folders. It can show strands of communication or whatever label fits the situation.

Google Forms: free form creator - great for tests and surveysParent volunteer sign-up, parent communication log, Back-to-School contact form (which could be transferred to a spread sheet) MUST DO THIS NEXT YEAR

Google Hangouts: similar to skype for video conferencingVideos on "How to": https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=google+hangout+tutorial+2014Google Hangouts on Air: http://www.googlegooru.com/how-to-start-a-hangout-on-air/

GoogleVoice -- Alternative to giving parents your phone number---FREE---Can exchange txts- can only collect voicemails without calling function-transcribe voicemails-block callers-record phone calls---can give you a new number

GOOGLE TRANSLATE -- To voice or text When using the translate tool, Chinese is usually poorly done.
